Both are popular door finishes in Malaysian kitchens. Laminate is the practical all-rounder; acrylic is the glossy, high-end look. Here is how to choose between them.
The quick difference
Laminate (HPL) is a durable, matte-or-textured sheet finish that hides fingerprints and takes daily abuse well. Acrylic is a high-gloss, mirror-like finish that looks premium and reflects light — but shows fingerprints and fine scratches more. Both go on top of a plywood or particleboard door core.
Laminate doors — pros and cons
- Tough, heat- and scratch-resistant — great for busy kitchens
- Hides fingerprints and smudges, easy to maintain
- Huge range of colours, wood-grains and textures
- More affordable than acrylic
- Less of a premium mirror shine
Acrylic doors — pros and cons
- High-gloss, seamless, modern look that feels premium
- Reflects light — makes a small kitchen feel brighter and bigger
- Colour-rich and vibrant
- Shows fingerprints, dust and fine scratches more easily
- Costs more, and repairs are harder
Cost and value
Laminate is the better value and the safer choice for a hardworking family kitchen. Acrylic costs more per foot and is best where the kitchen is a design showpiece and you do not mind wiping the glossy fronts. Many JB homeowners do a mix — acrylic on the upper feature doors, laminate on the hardworking lowers. See ranges in our Malaysia kitchen cabinet price guide.
Which lasts better in our climate?
Both finishes handle humidity well — the bigger durability factor is the board underneath (moisture-resistant plywood in the wet zone). For daily wear, laminate resists scratches and heat better; acrylic keeps its shine for years if you wipe it regularly. More on this in our best cabinet material for humidity guide.
Our take
If you cook a lot and want low maintenance, choose laminate. If you want a bright, glossy, showroom kitchen and will keep it wiped, acrylic is beautiful. We build custom kitchen cabinets in both and can show you real samples in JB before you decide.
