Quartz vs Solid Surface Countertop: Which Is Better for Your Kitchen?

The countertop is the surface you use every day, so it is worth choosing well. Quartz is the hard, premium workhorse; solid surface is the seamless, repairable all-rounder. Here is how they compare in Malaysia.

The short version

Quartz (engineered stone) is very hard, scratch- and stain-resistant, and looks like natural stone — but it costs more and has visible seams on long runs. Solid surface (acrylic-based) is seamless, warmer to the touch and repairable if scratched or burned — but it is softer and less heat-resistant. Both are popular in Malaysian kitchens.

Quartz — strengths and trade-offs

  • Very hard — resists scratches and knife marks
  • Highly stain-resistant, non-porous, hygienic
  • Realistic stone and marble looks
  • Heavier and pricier; long counters have visible joints
  • Not fully heat-proof — still use a trivet for hot pots

Solid surface — strengths and trade-offs

  • Seamless joins — one continuous, hygienic surface
  • Scratches and burns can be sanded out and repaired
  • Warmer, softer feel; integrated sinks possible
  • Softer — scratches more easily than quartz
  • Less heat-resistant — hot pans can mark it

Cost in Malaysia

Solid surface is generally the more affordable option; quartz costs more per foot but adds durability and a premium stone look. Sintered stone sits above both for heat and scratch resistance at a higher price. The countertop is quoted separately from the cabinet — see how it fits the total in our kitchen cabinet price guide.

Which should you pick?

If you cook hard, cut often and want the most durable, low-worry surface, go quartz. If you want a seamless look, a warmer feel, an integrated sink or a tighter budget — and you will use a chopping board and trivet — solid surface is excellent value.

FAQ

Can I put a hot pot directly on quartz?

Best not to. Quartz resists heat better than solid surface, but sudden high heat can still damage the resin that binds it. Always use a trivet or pot stand on either surface.

Is solid surface outdated compared to quartz?

No — it is just different. Solid surface is still popular for its seamless joins, integrated sinks and repairable scratches. Quartz wins on hardness; solid surface wins on seamlessness and repairability.
